A Loss for the World
Yesterday Desmond Tutu died. His face prominently hangs in our home. He guest presented at an ELCA Youth Gathering years ago. He and the Dalai Lama co-wrote a book I value. News reports identified him from Cape Town but he belonged to the world. An energetic and compassionate young woman from Cape Town serves us our wine at our evening meal. I pulled her to our table in the midst of her duties to others and said, "Cape Town was in the news today. Did you hear?" At her quick shake of her head I said, "I'm sorry to tell you this, but Desmond Tutu died today. Jerry and I both had tears." Her eyes teared as she looked around in panic, knowing she needed to be fully present for three more hours. She blinked tears. "I must call my mother. You see, she works for the Anglican Church." "I'm sorry." I repeated. Guilty of causing grief when her smiling eyes were being summoned by her superior. Thank you, generous God, for the gift of Bish...
